Scared of Storms
Many dogs are scared of thunderstorms and lightning, as they should be, especially when they’re outside during these storms.
If at all possible, do your dogs a favor and bring them in the house during severe thunder and lightning storms. Not only is lightning dangerous, but possible hail from these storms could injure or kill an animal left defenseless.
Some of my inside dogs just hate these storms. Our Akita, Mia, and especially our little Chihuahuas Tinkerbelle, Puffy and Tiny immediately look for places to hide. Have you ever seen a full-grown Akita trying to squeeze herself under a couch? It’s quite a sight!
Mia now runs straight for the bathroom in the hall and even closes the door behind her during thunderstorms. The Chihuahuas are very restless and scared. They climb in my lap and paw at me, as if telling me, “I’m scared, please hold me.” Often they jump on our king-size bed and get under the covers for safety and comfort.
The best thing you can do for your scaredy-cat dogs during this time is to reassure them with loving words and a few hugs. Tell them the storm will pass and before they know it, it’s over.

My little Cocoa, a Pomeranian, is scared too by lightning and thunder, or even now, of just rain. She wants someone to hold her and prefers to be on a bed or a couch during the storm. Thanks so much for the hints!
