Puppy Love

Published by angietawater at 5:05 am under Life with Dogs Edit This

I’ve always wondered if dogs fall in love. Jake and Mandy, two beautiful dogs that “adopted” my in-laws years ago, proved to me that they do.

Here is their love story.

Jake, a Chow, went to live with my in-laws in the country in the spring of 1997. He really took to my in-laws, especially my father-in-law who showered him with attention. Jake loved riding into town with him almost as much as he loved getting the leftover French fries from the Dairy Palace. He also loved living in the country where he chased rabbits and squirrels all day long.

Jake was very territorial and would not allow other dogs to come on his property. He would even chase coyotes off.

After a few months of living in the country, Jake took off for a few days. My in-laws continued to put fresh food and water out for him every day but were afraid he wouldn’t return. Soon, Jake did come home with a friend, a beautiful German shepherd mix we called Mandy.

Mandy and Jake were inseparable. They ate together, played together and hunted together. I’ve never seen two dogs so content with each other. Not once did I see them snap at each other. In fact, Jake would dig up treats that he’d hidden in the yard for his sweet Mandy.

Jake and Mandy had a couple of litters of puppies together before she was spayed. All of them seemed to go to good homes. After the last puppy was given away, Mandy would just lie around and mope. It was then that Jake would curl up next to her and lick her face, almost as if to reassure her that she would always have him.

Those two dogs lived happily and lovingly together for many years.

I worked in rescue for many years, and usually we didn’t encourage dogs being adopted together. Occassionally, however, two dogs came into the shelter together who had such an obvious devotion to each other, we just couldn’t stand to separate. Thanks for sharing your sweet story!
