Prepare for Emergencies

Published by angietawater at 1:00 am under Dog Health, Life with Dogs Edit This

When disaster strikes, few people are prepared to have their lives thrown into chaos. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for emergency situations but don’t forget your beloved pets.

It’s a good idea to place a Rescue Alert Sticker on a front window or door of your home that lists the number and types of pets in your house. This is especially important if you are not home at the time disaster strikes.

If you are home and have to evacuate, take your pets with you. They are after all a part of your family. Be sure they wear collars with rabies tags and other information in case they get lost during the chaos.

It’s wise to have an emergency kit for your pet that includes a leash, harness or pet carrier; a week’s supply of food and water; any medications your pet may need; and even a pet first aid kit. You also can put treats and toys in the kit if you want. Important information like your pet’s medical and vaccination records can be kept in there too.

If you can’t take your pets with you, make arrangements for them to stay at a kennel or veterinary facility in the event of an emergency. You also can arrange for a neighbor, friend or family member to care for your pet in their home if you can’t care for them.

Be prepared for emergencies, your pet’s life may depend on it.
